Ovidius GmbH is Europe’s sole distributor of TopLeaf, the professional typesetting system from Turn-Key Systems Pty Ltd (Australia). The Berlin-based software specialist for technical documentation now sells licenses, and training and application developments for TopLeaf-based publication solutions. TopLeaf is a fully automatic typesetting system for XML and SGML documents. It allows the user to create publications in PDF format. It is particularly suitable for complex typesetting requirements in the field of technical documentation and publishing. The technology partnership between Ovidius and Turn-Key Systems goes back to 2009.

TopLeaf can be used as an interactive desktop system or, for fully automatic processing, in combination with an XML editorial system on one or several servers simultaneously. The scope of features in TopLeaf is scalable from individual workstation requirements right up to enterprise solutions.

TopLeaf’s special features include:

• Looseleaf publishing: TopLeaf offers two different approaches to looseleaf publishing: optimised generation of individual change pages, and generation of replacement packages for entire sections – as is typically required for technical documentation. A “list of effective pages” and replacement instructions can be produced automatically as well.
• Generation of change marks: TopLeaf identifies changes in the XML source and generates change bars for inserted or changed text and deletion marks for deleted text.
• Bidirectional typesetting: This feature is designed for Arabic or Hebrew publications. Left to right and right to left text can be mixed without disrupting line breaks or causing punctuation problems.
• Synoptic typesetting: TopLeaf permits creation of bilingual publications, with the source text and target text running synchronously in two columns, even with language pairs such as English-Arabic.

 

Ovidius linked TopLeaf to its TCToolbox editorial system in 2009 and since then has relied on TopLeaf for projects involving the publication of AIPs (Aeronautical Information Publications) for the UK National Air Traffic Service (NATS)  and manuals for the German airline Germania.
