XWord – The fast way from XML to Microsoft Word
Microsoft Word is the de facto standard in word processing and can be found on nearly all Windows PCs. With XWord (pronounced “Cross Word”) formatted Word documents can be created quickly, automatically and with high quality from media-neutral XML.
How does XWord work?
XWord creates Word documents in the XML exchange format WordProcessingML. All important functions are delivered to users by a simply structured but powerful DTD.
The creation of Word documents is achieved by a two-step transformation:
- conversion of source documents into XWord DTD using XSLT, using MetaMorphosis or other available
- conversion tools automatic transfer of DTD to WordProcessingML.
The user requires no knowledge of the WordProcessingML schema. Layout and format changes are set easily by customisation of the master pages and formats in Word. No programming knowledge is needed.
Application scenarios
You can use XWord in different domains:
- as desktop formatter for SGML/XML documents
- for fast creation of a print preview for SGML/XML documents directly out of an XML editor (e.g. XMetaL)
- for the generation of Word documents out of an XML Content Management System (e.g. TCToolbox)
- as a fast generator for Web-based variable data processing applications, e.g. creation of contracts, orders and forms.
